Editing Services

 

To begin any editing project with me, please get in touch with me via the Contact page. The information below is a quick overview of the services I offer, but I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have. 

 

Manuscript Reviews

 

Short works – I read short stories and creative nonfiction essays on an ongoing basis, and return notes (1-2 single-spaced pages of advice and critique) within 2 weeks. I do not include copyediting or proofreading, only an overall written response. Prices start at $200.

 

I do not provide manuscript reviews for poetry, but I know a number of excellent professional poets who do; please contact me for details. I do not provide manuscript reviews for any type of academic assignment. 

 

Long works and Book-length projects – I read and critique longer works (anything over 10,000 words) when my schedule permits, and can provide a custom price quote and timeline for your project. The first step to working with me on a longer project is to contact me to arrange a free 15-minute consultation, where I will gather information about your project and use that information to create a quote for you. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the consultation. 

 

I can read an entire book manuscript, or a portion of a book. I can read novellas, a series of stories, a collection of essays, a memoir, and many other kinds of prose writing. I am able to provide useful commentary on some kind of academic/professional writing but not others, and will let you know during your initial free consultation whether I am able to work on your project or not. 

 

As with the shorter works described above, I do not provide copyediting or proofreading services. I specialize in developmental editing—editing intended to help you make big-picture changes to your work, or improve your overall writing skills (depending on your particular goals). If you need proofreading or copyediting services, I do collaborate with a number of well-qualified editors who provide those services, and can put you in touch with them.

Phone Consultations

 

For longer works (over 10,000 words) I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to answer any questions you may have about my editing process. Calls can be conducted by phone or Skype. If your book is notfiction or narrative nonfiction, you can also use this consultation to tell me more about your project and find out whether I am able to provide editing services for your book. I do not offer services for books that are outside my area of expertise, but may be able to direct you to another editor who can help. 

 

Longer phone consultations are available at a rate of $30 per 15-minute increment. These consultations are an opportunity to talk about writing and publishing, or to ask general questions about your writing project. If you would like to have an in-depth conversation about a particular piece of your work, you should book a manuscript review in tandem with a phone consultation. I am unable to read any written work prior to a phone consultation unless you have booked a manuscript review.
